Biomimicry

Update: We won a BUMA Award Best Original Composition Experience for ‘Biomimicry’! See post

Together with Lavinia Meijer on harp, I’ve composed the music for a short film by fashion designer Iris van Herpen and the Dutch National Ballet, directed by Ryan McDaniels. What a great team!

With the music I wanted to offer contrasts, between strength and fragility, between beauty and darkness, I wanted to make use of how electronic music can sound both warm and cold, parallel with how Lavinia’s harp can sound both open and lyrical and closed and dark when she mutes the strings. I tried to complement Iris’s dresses and Jingjing’s dancing by offering both textures that I thought fit the dresses and movement, with all textures offering details and variations when examined closer, offering counterparts to all the exquisite details in the dresses,  the movement, the harp playing, and the cinematography.
